Report on Cooley Environment and Health Group Meeting, Sunday 6th September 2015

An executive meeting was held in the Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co Louth Sunday 6th September 2015 @ 10am chaired by the Vice Chairperson Mr Dermot Mooney.

The meeting began with a brief discussion inspired by the Chair of the meeting and the Treasurer on anti-social activities and the effectiveness of dealing with such behaviour(s) within the confines of the Cooley Peninsula, with particular reference to Carlingford. It was agreed that there was a limit to what we could achieve and that it was best left to the immediate interest groups within Carlingford, who naturally have our full support. The agenda then focussed on the forthcoming winter workshop on Water - Guaranteeing A Safe Supply.

It was agreed that the workshop would be held in the Strand Hotel, Omeath on Saturday the 23rd January 2016 starting at 2pm, rather than a week later as was the original agreed.  The committee discussed possible speakers to address the environmental and health issues on the topic of water within the Cooley Peninsula and its hinterlands. The executive agreed on the methodology to research the topic and report the findings at the next meeting to be held Sunday 8th November 2015. Mr Dermot Mooney, Vice-Chairperson of the group, is to be the facilitator for the 2016 workshop.

The highlight of the meeting was an address by Ollan Herr of Herr Ltd on the need to not only guarantee safe supplies but to recycle waste products contributing a shortage of essential nutrients. Herr Ltd. currently supply a number of products which people can install in their own homes to contribute to the recycling effort. A brief synopsis of his talk may be viewed here. We are hopeful that Ollan will be a keynote speaker at the forthcoming workshop in January.

Meetings schedule for 2015 agreed to be on Sundays in the Strand Hotel at 10 am as follows:

  1. Sunday, 8th November, 10 am.
  2. Sunday 10th January 2016, 10 am - to be confirmed at November meeting.
  3. Winter Workshop: 23rd January 2016 from 2pm.

A public meeting was held in Carlingford due to concerns relating to anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the Medieval Town. Our meeting heard it “came to nothing"- therefore it was agreed to leave it to the Publicans, Residents, Community Alert and the Gardai to sort it.

Archbishop Hynes informed the meeting that we are now joined up with the PPN and that the PPN is now researching which pillar we will be under.

Signor Crudden informed the meeting "The aide-mémoire for the theory of community development which we have been using in Cooley Environmental and Health Group is ABCD (asset based community development)" - which means the objective is to make full use of all the assets available in the local community rather than bringing in experts from abroad.

Report on Cooley Environment and Health Group Meeting, Sunday 18th January 2015
Great enthusiasm was exhibited at this meeting as it was the last official meeting prior to the workshop entitled “Leadership and Participation – The Demise of Local Government” to be held on Saturday 24th January 2015 from 2 PM – 5.30 PM in the Strand Hotel, Shore Road, Omeath.

The list of speakers is almost complete having Deputy Fergus O’Dowd, TD; Mr Eamonn O’Boyle (the last Chairperson of Dundalk Town Council); and many more on board under the baton of facilitator Mr Dermot Mooney; with Prof Denis Pringle, our mentor; Signor Seán Crudden, Treasurer as well as Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes amongst the crew.

The meeting was thankful to Dundalk FM 100 for having our Chairperson, Mr Paul Smyth; Treasurer, Signor Seán Crudden; and Secretary/Pro ++Michael Desmond Hynes taking part on the Morning Programme with Miss Caoimhe O’Malley, Dundalk FM 100 presenter, who was excellent at posing relevant questions about the workshop.

Prof Pringle sent an e-mail for the meeting to note his apologies for not making it to the meeting this Sunday and included two web-related matters he wish to report:

A) The web-site has been optimised for small devices, so it should now look better on phones, tablets etc. than it did before.

B) He has now managed to get a licence for the GIS software needed for the proposed atlas, so it is now back on the to-do list (although he noted he was running into a few other difficulties which may limit what he can do.

The executive now look forward to the forthcoming Workshop 2015 and wish to welcome all that will be in attendance.
